Himalaya Corría el 8 de mayo de 1978, cuando Reinhold Messner y Peter Habeler llegaban a la cumbre del Everest (8.848 metros). Era la primera vez que se hacía sin oxígeno suplementario lo que daba al traste con la falsa leyenda de que una montaña tan alta jamás podría lograrse sin la ayuda del O2.Ambos participaron en una expedición de caracter multitudinario que contaba con la participación de Leo Dickinson, un realizador que filmó Everest unmask, una cinta que desglosa cada paso de la ascensión.

Otros George Leigh Mallory y Andrew Irvine fueron unos montañeros británicos que tomaron parte en una expedicion que se proponía escalar el Everest, en 1924. El 8 de junio, ambos desaparecieron a más de 8000 metros en la cara noreste de la montaña. Aún hoy persiste la duda sobre si consiguieron hacer cumbre, en cuyo caso, se habrían adelantado en 29 años al primer ascenso oficial, que llevaron a cabo Hillary y Norgay en 1953. Sus cuerpos no fueron encontrados hasta 1999, 75 años después de su desaparición.
